The Edge

The February Edge saw a YWAM team from Orlando, Florida visiting Cornwall. Kernowyouth's Phil Hadley went along to find out what was going down...

There were about 80 young people aged between 12 and 18 sat in a darkened cafe atmosphere with DJ Rob Parr on the decks waiting for the start of this monthly event held at Truro Baptist Church. The youngsters had come from Bodmin, Newquay, Falmouth, Redruth and a few brought in by some street evangelism in Truro that afternoon. The DJ was good, but gave way to the live band who opened with a worship set. This included a great version of "Holy Moment" with a driving rhythm and an impressive drum build on the "Holy, holy's". There was mixed participation by the audience. The Christians were obvious by their raised hands. Others sat sitting and staring, taking in the new experience. The youth leaders were bopping at the back trying to look cool and hoping their ear plugs worked!

We were then introduced to the YWAM Team who were asked what their favourite thing about Cornwall was. The answers ranged from Daisy saying "The pasty" to Melinda replying "Keren & the scenery" or one of the lads quipping "The fact that Disney World is on the other side of the Atlantic!"

The YWAM Team then performed a mime set to music. The piece was entitled "Redeemer" and in four minutes summed up the essence of the Gospel message. It showed how a typical guy through putting money, drink and girls first in his life built a wall between himself and God. It took Jesus to come and through His death and resurrection bring redemption by breaking through the wall.

Mikey was then interviewed about his band "Solstice" which he explained means "to stand". The band are currently unsigned but attracting a lot of attention Stateside. An attempt to play a video on the laptop & projector failed, so we listened to the track instead!

Then came a quick interview with Truro lad Nathan Trevivian who, when asked what his gifts were, said breakdance and music. He went on to explain his desire was to use them for God. This was then followed by a rap from KJ52 attacking the commercialisation of ministry.

The YWAM team next performed a skit on "How not to do evangelism!" This brought some light relief to the evening with its amusing cameos. Daisy, one of the team, gave her testimony how as a missionary kid in Honduras the impact of her changed life led to the salvation of the family cook.

Lee then gave a talk on "How are you living your life?" which included some personal testimony and a challenge to Christians to really live the life. This was followed by some more worship - "I surrender all" - and an appeal to come forward if anyone wanted prayer. Many had left by this point (bus to catch to Newquay!) but a steady trickle asked for prayer.

The band rounded off the evening with three more songs, "Thank You For Saving Me", "Lord, You Have My Heart" and "This Is The Air That I Breathe". Some could have stayed all night to listen to Rosie's amazing voice. The band, but this lead singer in particular, will go far.

So that was The Edge. I couldn't quite grasp whether it was trying to evangelise its audience, challenge the Christians to love & worship God fully, or promote the work of YWAM. Maybe all three. Anyway I couldn't quite see who in the audience was in danger of commercialising their personal ministry, or maybe the band had a record deal looming I wasn't aware of!!! However, I am glad I went - it beat Saturday night TV anyday! Maybe you should try it too.

The next Edge is on Saturday 15th March when CCYC will be in town promoting the summer camp. For full details check out the What's On Page.
