Magnified Youth Club

Magnified is a youth club for teenagers in St Austell run by St Austell Baptist Church. Kernowyouth went along to find out what's been going on...

Magnified is the youth club of St Austell Baptist Church. It is held on a Friday evening during school term time in the Cornerstone Christian Community Centre. It is run by a team of youth leaders led by Nic & Phil Hadley.

Magnified is a club that you join, not a drop in centre. Being a member entitles you to all sorts of privileges, such as going on the trips the club organises, and being able to enter all sorts of competitions. Someone arriving for the first time has a free introductory night. After that they need to bring back the membership form signed by a parent/guardian and pay a subscription of 50p per week. Magnified now has over 40 members. It is open to young people in Years 7 to 11 at school.

On a Friday night Magnified has had a series of games nights with all sorts of activities ranging from table tennis to computer games, air hockey to table football, giant pick up sticks to pool. There are also themed evenings, such as our recent Hawaiian Beach Party, and film nights and quiz nights. Magnified also recently did a Spy Trail around the town centre.

In March 20 members of Magnified, 6 leaders and one baby went away for the weekend, staying in the Youth Hostel at Land’s End. It was a great time with a wide range of activities. These included a torchlight walk to the sea, games on the beach, attending the CCYC Preview Event in Truro, and a ramble along the cliff path near Cape Cornwall. Magnified have also had a trip to the Space SW Concert in Truro. This featured 3 artists – Nikki Rogers, Finchley & The Gentlemen. There are plans for more trips to various events as the summer approaches, including CCYC – the Cornwall Christian Youth Camp, held at Bodmin College during the first week of the summer holidays. Its members love it, and the club is always open to new teenagers trying it out.
