Easter Monday saw a brand new event for young people in Camborne. Kernowyouth was there to find out what went on...

A brand new event “Ignite” brought together young people from a range of different churches for an afternoon in Camborne on Easter Monday. About 50 attended the event which was designed to help and encourage Christian young people in their faith. There were young people from Camborne Methodist Church, Camborne Parish Church, Camborne Elim Church, Carnhell Green Christian Fellowship, Gloweth Chapel in Truro, Redruth Baptist Church as well as the host church Fore Street Gospel Hall in Camborne.

The worship was led by the Ignite band with youthworker Graham Adamson at the helm. The musicians came from various churches and had only come together for this event. Their tight and funky sound made many think they had played together for some time.

Martin, a 17 year old member of the youth group at Carnhell Green, gave his testimony telling the audience that although he had been brought up in a Christian home, it had only really been in the last two years that he had developed his own faith and begun to do things for the Lord. He gave examples of how God had provided and said God was our refuge in times of trouble or trial.

The youth group at Carnhell then performed a powerful sketch showing how Jesus can break through and save us from not only the penalty for sin, but the many problems it can cause in our lives as well.

Guest speaker, Phil Hadley of St Austell Baptist Church, then spoke on how the evidence of the empty grave that first Easter time shows that our faith is not a delusion, as people like Richard Dawkins would have us believe, but is rooted in the facts of history. He said the Christian faith is reasonable and logical.

The torrential rain meant that the town trail activity that had been prepared had to be abandoned, so after a short break the event moved into its second session. Again the band led us in some great songs: “I am a friend of God,” the young people sang with gusto.

Paul Aylen, the youth leader at Fore Street and a street evangelist, then spoke while performing some illusions with a hankerchief. This was followed by a testimony from 13 year old Nathaniel from the Carnhell Green youth group. He told us that he became a Christian when he was 9 years of age. He explained that it has only been in the last year he discovered God wasn’t boring and has begun doing some great things for God.

Phil Hadley then spoke from Romans 1 verses 16-17 challenging the young people to not be ashamed of the gospel. He said Jesus was our message, we were only the messengers, and when we lived each day by faith God’s power would be in our living so that our lives impacted those we came into contact with. He said God can use anyone and ended his talk with an incredible list of Bible characters that many would have written off, but God used to great effect and to His glory.

The event ended with a time of worship which saw several of the young people do business with God. A tea of pizza, chicken, hot dogs & lots more was then provided. Organiser Bob MacFarland was delighted with the way the event had unfurled. He said, “This was a first, but we were keen to provide something on Easter Monday for the younger generation. This church has seen years of conferences for the adults, but we felt it was time to start feeding the up and coming generation. It’s been a great day. I just praise God for his awesome goodness.”
