Seeing is Believing?

by Phil Hadley

The other day a student in one of my classes said to me "Show me God so I can see Him and I'll believe." I replied, "What a stupid notion. So you only believe in what you can see?" "Yes," said the student, a little

“Show me God so I can see Him and I'll believe”

uncertain as to why his challenge hadn't foxed me. "So how do you cope in a world where you don't ever turn on the tv or a light because you don't believe in electricity, you never go sailing or hang out the washing because you don't believe in the wind, and you don't bother turning up for the date with your girlfriend because you don't believe in love? Are you saying your girlfriend doesn't love you? Or the trees outside are swaying due to some big hand pushing them back and forth?"

“I can't see electricity but I know my computer works on it.”

By now the rest of the class were laughing and he was beginning to realise how untenable his position was. We may not see God in the same way our eyes see this text on the screen, but that doesn't mean he is isn't real. I can't see electricity but I know my computer works on it. I can't see the wind but I can see its effects. I can't see love but I have known its reality and the warmth of its experience.

“I know the reality of His love for me, when I look at Jesus dying on the cross in my place.”

Likewise I can't see God but I know He is at work in my life. I can't see Him but I can see the effects of his power in the wonders of creation. I can't see God but I know the reality of His love for me when I look at Jesus dying on the cross in my place.

Only the fool says in his heart 'there is no God'. Only 4.5% of the world's population are atheists. Are you really that stupid?

“The fool has said in his heart, “there is no God”” Psalm 14 v1
