A living Nightmare - Part I

by Chaz Scott

Until I was about 11, I attended Church  with my family every Sunday, and it was just the same  droning service that went on and on. This was my view of  what the Christian  life was, and I

“Do I have to go to Church?, it's SO boring!”

started to get tired of it and moan to my parents- "Do I have to go to Church, it's SO boring!"

That summer, we took a fortnight long holiday as a family to Mallorca, as my Dad worked in the Royal Navy, this was the first time we could all go together.

sun, sea and sand - I was having so much fun

Well, the holiday was going really well - sun, sea and sand - I was having so much fun. A few days before the end of the holiday, the car we had hired developed a fault in the front passenger seat (and there were no seat belts whatsoever in the back!!) so Dad decided to take it back.

then came  the point that turned a perfect holiday into a living nightmare

It's quite hard to picture what happened on the  journey, but try and imagine it. We were travelling along the 'motorway' well  within the limits, I was listening to my Walkman and looking out of the window. There was a junction coming up, and  my attention was drawn forward. As we approached, I saw a  frustrated couple in a car that were trying to pull out.

Suddenly, the car tried  to pull out in front of us into the other lane, and everything slowed down. His  car stalled, and he was

My Dad hit the steering wheel, my Sister hit her head and I shot forward and fractured my knee

left in the middle of the road.  Then over the music from my Walkman, I heard the  unforgettable sound of the wheels screeching trying to stop the car, then came the point that turned a perfect holiday into a living nightmare.

My Dad hit the steering wheel and damaged his  ribs, my Sister hit her head on the headrest of my Mum’s seat, and I shot forward  onto the seat in front and fractured my knee. My Mum, because her seat was insecure, was thrown backward and forward, and ended up in a  web of seat belt with her head on the floor.

Mum...was trapped in a mound of metal that used to be a car

When we had stopped moving, my sister clambered  over me out of the car following my Dad, and I followed afterward. Dad ran  around to see to my Mum who was screaming for me, and I couldn't get to her - that hurt me so much. I wanted to hug my Mum so tightly and make sure she was all right, but she was trapped in a mound of metal that used to be a car, and had been transformed into a write-off.

When the accident occurred, a passing driver must have phoned for help because

four ambulances and some police cars turned up

it was not much longer after that that four ambulances and some police cars turned up. The car was so bad that some parts had to be cut off before my Mum could be pulled out. My Dad, my Sister and I were taken off to hospital not knowing the fate of my Mum, leaving her behind in a flood of blue and red flashes....
