Hurricane Warning
Darwin, in north west Australia, with its population of 53,000 is the biggest town for miles around. It was Christmas Eve and everyone was about their last minute preparations for the festive occasion.
That forgotten present, those extra decorations, a last frantic dash to the supermarket.
by now the parties were in full swing |
During the afternoon and evening TV and radio passed on warnings of a possible hurricane. But they weren't really heeded, the party mood prevailed. Additional warnings weren't taken too seriously - by
now the parties were in full swing.
Almost every building was destroyed |
Hurricane Tracey hit Darwin at 3am Christmas morning 1974. With winds of around 200k.p.h., it created havoc. Fifty people were dead. Almost every building
was destroyed. 43,000 were made homeless; 23,000 had to be evacuated. All because a warning went unheeded.
For 2000 years Christians have been issuing warnings of the danger of a life without Christ. Time is running out. The Bible says "How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?"
And what those of us who have heeded the warning? Are we telling others, or just leaving them to perish?.......
