How to become a Christian

SAY SORRY

to God for all the things you have done wrong and turn from everything you know is wrong in your life.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, the saying goes. But we need to realise that our lives need fixing because of the sin that all of us have in our lives. None of us are perfect. We have all sinned, and our sin means we don’t have the relationship with our Creator God that he designed us for and we are unable to live life to the full in the way he intended and we will face the consequences for our sin once we die. We need to tell God we are sorry for messing up, for accepting second best and leaving him out of our lives.

BIBLE BIT: Romans 3 v23, Acts 3 v19

SAY THANK YOU

to Jesus for dying on the cross in your place, taking the punishment for your sin and now offering you his free gift of forgiveness, eternal life and his Spirit.

To become a Christian we have to believe that Jesus is who he claimed to be – the Son of God – and that he came into our world 2000 years ago to be our Saviour, our Rescuer.

When he died on the cross it wasn’t the sad end of a tragic tale, but the way God had sorted for our sin to be forgiven. In fact God had it so under control that on the third day Jesus rose again from the dead and so is able to offer us total forgiveness, life as God intended it and his Spirit. When we begin to appreciate what Jesus has done for us and will do for us, we just have to give respect and say thank you.

BIBLE BIT: John 3 v16

SAY YES PLEASE

to God to accept his gift and invite him to come and live within you by his Spirit. It’s this acceptance by faith that makes you a Christian.

God doesn’t force his way into our lives – we have to invite him and accept his free gift. We can’t earn it by being good, or by being religious. It was Keith Green (singer who died in plane crash in 1980’s) who said, “Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to MacDonalds makes you a hamburger.” We can’t inherit it from our parents or grandparents. We have to have faith for ourselves to accept what God offers and make it our own.

We do that by saying to him, “Dear God, I’m sorry for all the wrong things I have done and I turn from everything I know is wrong in my life. Thank you Jesus for dying on the cross in my place. I accept your offer of forgiveness. Come into my life and make me a Christian. Amen.” Why don’t you do that now?

If you have prayed that prayer...

WHAT NEXT?

1. Tell someone – your family, a mate, your youth leader or email us here at . Some people may make fun of you (some laughed at Jesus), but others may want to become Christians too.

2. Get a Bible and start to read a little bit each day. This is how we discover more of Jesus and help our new relationship with him to grow. If you’d like some help, ask us,  and we’ll send you a helpful  booklet called “Everyday with Jesus for New Christians”.

3. Pray. Talk to God naturally as to a close friend. Tell him what’s going down and how you feel. Thank him for what he’s done and is doing. Ask for his help – he’ll be only too delighted to give it, although often not in the way you expect!

4. Find a lively church. It is important to be part of a group of Christians who get together to worship God, to hear what god is saying to them through the Bible, and to encourage one another. Check out our What’s On Guide to see what’s happening in your area.
